On the Path to Joy

As I scratch away here, I have noticed an odd thing: that the greatest love lies at two points. One, the fulfilling of what is already known, where reality and preconception meld seamlessly together into their perfect form. The second, absolute novelty: where something so new and unexpected that it could not have been prefigured lands on your thumb like a dove and sings to you its piercing song. One that has never touched your mind before and now makes you rapt.

Both sides bleed pages of ink. The first, sickly and pale, bears the name “bias…” or sometimes “culture.” The second, has no proper name, and in all honesty can only be described as “magic” or “wonder.” But they are not in conflict, and here I must strike a line

To live a life of joy, to fall in love with some version of reality or some small corner of the earth, one of these must activate: either the joy of what you have or the pleasure of discovery and hope for what you do not. Only at those moments can your life truly come alive. It is not that you have to choose, but that you cannot pick neither. You must live a life featuring either motion or relaxed stillness. Otherwise it is only a malaise. A sad story of stalling out; of wondering which is to be…?

In a world where time moves forwards relentlessly, life cannot be lived without a destination. You are a moving object hurtling through a universe of happening. Lost without somewhere to end up. And here are our two beautiful tricks for salvaging good feeling from this reality. The first is to be in a constant state of arriving. To long for where you already are so that every happening is a fulfillment. Our second, is to always be reaching out and traveling and always one step closer; A Tantalus full of hope.
